This client wanted to inject some modern style into her kitchen, keeping in character with her century old house. She liked a classic look but wanted to eliminate the fussy details like corbels and shelf supports. Having three young adult children with partners visiting for extended periods of time, the kitchen needed to feel spacious and clear of clutter.
The proportion of the solid panel doors and lit glass wall units to the ornate rangehood housing with floating shelf was carefully thought through to create a visual balance.
Typical to the era of the house nothing was square nor level. An extra high panel has been fitted to the top of the units to trick the eye into not noticing the various levels of the ceiling.
Three sides of the 2720 x 1300 island are cleverly used for storage including hiding the microwave while also incorporating social seating on two sides.
